In this segment, you get a close-up view of the actual block work that will make up the sub-basement. The last (top) course consists of typical 8in. X 8in. X 16in. concrete blocks. Below the top course and continuing down to the footer are "beasties"; 12in X 12in. X 16in. blocks.
These massive blocks will then be poured solid after the insertion of ¾ inch vertical rebar. The actual basement slab will be poured until the concrete reaches to the top of the last block which is notched out.
This is not for the do-it-yourselfer, unless you like to build stuff like this, then tear it down so you can rebuild it according to the way the county likes to see it. Unfortunately, this happens more than you might think, whether it's a crawlspace, a basement, or roof systems. The old saying still holds true- "Dorothy, this ain't Kansas."
